Making Medical History
In 2013, Rowan became one of only two universities in the nation to offer both M.D. and D.O. medical degree programs. Rowan co-founded Cooper Medical School of Rowan University with Cooper University Health Care, welcoming the medical school’s inaugural class in the Summer of 2012. In 2021, Rowan partnered with Virtua Health, South Jersey's largest health system, to establish the Virtua Health College of Medicine & Life Sciences at Rowan University (VHC).
VHC encompasses the state's only osteopathic medical school, Rowan-Virtua SOM; an expanded nursing and allied health professions school, Rowan-Virtua School of Nursing and Health Professions; a new school of Translational Biomedical Engineering and Sciences; the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; multiple research institutes and centers; and affiliated clinical practices at Rowan Medicine with the Virtua Medical Group to improve patient care and train the healthcare workforce, so they can be the leading caregivers of tomorrow.
Rowan University’s Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine will be the first veterinary school in the State of New Jersey. Currently, there are just 33 veterinary schools in the nation and only five on the east coast. With the addition of the veterinary school, Rowan will become the second institution in the nation to offer Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Doctor of Medicine, and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degrees. The sixty-student inaugural class is expected in Fall 2025, pending approval from the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education.
This growth has propelled Rowan to become a stronger educational leader, poised to impact the healthcare landscape of both our region and across the nation.
