National agreement connects ITI apprenticeships with Rowan University degrees

Rowan University and the International Training Institute for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry (ITI) have formalized a new national educational partnership designed to expand opportunities for members of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) to advance their education and careers.

The agreement creates new pathways for SMART members who complete ITI's nationally accredited apprenticeship programs to pursue academic credentials through Rowan University while building on the knowledge, skills and experience gained through years of classroom instruction and hands-on training.

Founded more than 50 years ago, ITI is the education and training arm of SMART and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA). The organization develops curriculum, instructor training and educational resources for more than 150 training centers across the United States and Canada.

Through the partnership, eligible SMART members who successfully complete an ITI apprenticeship program may receive up to 56 transfer credits that can be applied toward Rowan University's online Bachelor of Arts in construction management program. The agreement also establishes pathways to Rowan's Certificate of Undergraduate Study programs in construction management, construction project management and construction leadership, as well as Rowan's Master of Engineering Management program.

Designed for working professionals, the programs are offered through Rowan Online and the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, enabling students to continue advancing their careers while pursuing additional credentials.

By connecting industry training with academic opportunity, we're helping prepare the next generation of leaders for the construction and building systems industries.”

A distinguishing feature of the partnership is its stackable credential structure. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in construction management may earn certificates in construction management, construction project management and construction leadership as they complete core coursework, allowing them to gain recognized credentials before completing the full degree.

The agreement reflects a shared commitment to workforce development and to recognizing the value of apprenticeship education as a foundation for continued academic achievement. By connecting nationally accredited industry training with higher education, Rowan University and ITI are creating opportunities for SMART members to advance their careers while strengthening the future workforce of the sheet metal and air conditioning industry.
