Inaugural physician assistant cohort begins journey at Rowan-Virtua SOM

A new chapter began the week of August 31 at Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) as the inaugural cohort of 55 Physician Assistant (PA) Program students gathered for orientation, marking the start of their journey toward becoming healthcare professionals. 

The week opened with a welcome from Rowan University and SOM leadership, including Chancellor Tony Lowman, Vice Chancellor and Dean Richard Jermyn, Sewell Campus Dean Andrea Iannuzzelli, Vice Dean of Clinical Affairs Joshua Coren and PA Program Director David DeFilippo. Students also gathered for their first professional cohort photos, capturing a moment that will become part of the history of the new program. 

“New Jersey needs more highly trained healthcare professionals and your class represents an important step toward meeting that need,” said Chancellor Lowman. “We are proud to welcome you to Rowan University!”   

 Throughout the week, students were introduced to the people, resources and experiences that will shape their education over the next two years. They met PA faculty and staff, participated in class icebreakers and completed onboarding activities, including N95 fit testing, laptop distribution and ID badge pickup. 

Orientation also provided students with a broad introduction to SOM’s mission, and the academic and professional responsibilities of PA education. Sessions covered the curriculum and student handbook, academic success strategies, health and wellness resources, and faculty advising.  

“At SOM, our mission calls us to serve those who need us most, and you will carry that commitment with you throughout your education and career,” said Dean Jermyn.  

Safety and professionalism were also key themes throughout the week. Students completed training in infection control and sharps safety, HIPAA, privacy and security, campus safety and active shooter preparedness.  

The week wasn't all business. Students had opportunities to connect with one another through team building, an ice cream social featuring Mr. Softee and meetings with faculty advisors.  

“Welcoming our inaugural class is an incredibly exciting milestone for the PA Program and for Rowan-Virtua SOM,” said DeFilippo. “Our goal is to provide these students with a rigorous, supportive education that prepares them not only to become excellent clinicians, but also thoughtful, collaborative healthcare professionals who will serve their patients and communities well. We are excited to watch them grow together over the next two years and establish the foundation and traditions for every class that follows.” 

With orientation complete, the inaugural students are ready to begin the next phase of their journey—and, in the process, help establish the traditions and legacy of the Rowan-Virtua SOM PA program.
