Defining moment: University-wide Commencement celebrates bold thinking and new beginnings
Punctuated by confetti cannons and a chorus from the band, Rowan University celebrated the Class of 2026 during the university-wide Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 9. Thousands of loved ones lined the field of Coach Richard Wackar Stadium, welcoming the parade of more than 5,500 graduates across all schools and at all degree levels. Donning brown and gold caps and gowns, the ceremony signifies a defining moment – graduation.

“Not yet”
The program featured a keynote address by chairman of Inductotherm Group Worldwide and longtime Rowan trustee, Virginia Rowan Smith. She focused on two principles she credits with shaping her career and Rowan’s transformation: positive thinking and intentional growth.
She reflected on the legacy of her father, Henry M. Rowan, whose historic gift to the University set Rowan on a course of academic excellence and opportunity that defines the institution’s momentum. Rowan Smith highlighted the historic firsts and transformation since she first became involved in 1992, stemming from optimism and recognizing potential.
Rowan Smith reminded graduates that lasting achievements are built through persistence, passion and the courage to act. Meaningful growth, she noted, is fueled by those who have a passion for what they do.
“Find what excites you in this big world. Be fueled by passion, big dreams and satisfaction in work well done. Always pursue excellence and strive to be the best you can be,” she concluded.
Rowan Smith accepted an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities during the ceremony in recognition of her leadership in business and commitment to excellence in education.
Alumnus Antoinette “Toni” Libro was also recognized during the ceremony for her career of service to and for her alma mater. Libro, a vital part of Rowan’s academic and creative community for decades, was presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Ready for whatever comes next
During his remarks, President Houshmand thanked the family and friends in attendance for trusting Rowan with their “greatest assets.” He spoke to Rowan’s identity and momentum, acknowledging a legacy built on generous donors and supporters who made major milestones and moments, like New Jersey’s first veterinary school and the Wellness Village on West Campus.
Addressing the rapidly changing world, President Houshmand commended graduates’ adaptability and asserted they are prepared to move forward and face the changes ahead.
“Be ready to pivot. Be ready to push. Be ready to lead,” he said.
Following speaker remarks, President Houshmand, accompanied by Provost Vojislava Pophristic and Board of Trustees Chairman Chad Bruner, conferred the degrees of all the graduates.
A celebratory close
During her final farewell as Student Government Association President, Hope Campbell encouraged her fellow graduates to build connections, spread hope and to leave every space better than they found it. Drawing on personal experiences overcoming doubt and expectations, the bachelor’s degree in psychology graduate emphasized the collective growth of the class and reminded them to believe in themselves.
“The future is not just something we step into. It is something we shape together,” said Campbell.
To close out the ceremony, five graduates chosen at random won cash prizes sponsored by University Partners.
- Gourmet Dining sponsored a $2,500 prize awarded to a bachelor’s degree graduate
- Nexus Properties sponsored two $2,500 prizes awarded bachelor’s degree graduates, one $2,500 awarded to a Master’s degree graduate and one $2,500 to a doctoral degree graduate
The University-wide ceremony was part of Rowan’s annual week of Commencement celebrations. During ceremonies for the University’s schools and college, graduates will cross the stage and accept their diploma covers.
