Dear University Community,

This weekend’s Memorial Day observance starts our nation’s summer festivities in America’s historic 250th year. Amid all the celebration and tradition, I encourage you to pause and honor the memory of those who devoted their lives to serving our country and whose promise to serve cost them everything.

Even before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, those who fought to establish this republic changed the world with their sacrifice. Since then, American heroes have come from all over, from our hometowns and families, from all walks of life.

And although partisan politics seek to divide us today, everyone who values freedom enough to have pledged their all in service has earned our thanks and respect.

Please salute with me the memory of the fallen this weekend and celebrate with gratitude what their commitment continues to make possible for us all.

Very truly yours,

Ali A. Houshmand, Ph.D.
President
