Rowan University brings ‘Defy Definition’ campaign to life with immersive campus launch
Thriving on our terms
Music, movement and hands‑on experiences filled the Student Center Expansion April 15 as Rowan University unveiled Defy Definition, a new institutional campaign that leaders say puts words to what the University has been building—and becoming—for years.
The midday launch event, Defy Definition…Live!, marked the first large‑scale, on‑campus activation of a marketing campaign already visible throughout the region on billboards, television ads, digital platforms and national broadcasts. Hundreds of students gathered with faculty, staff and University leadership for an event designed to feel less like an announcement and more like an experience.
Rolling up our sleeves
Rowan President Ali A. Houshmand said the launch was long overdue.
“We have been defying definition at this University for years,” Houshmand said. “But the problem has been that we have really never made an attempt to introduce this University to the rest of the world. And today is that day.”
Houshmand pointed to Rowan’s rapid evolution over the past decade, noting that in 2016 the University was only classified at the master’s level and today operates at the R1 level (or very high research activity)—the highest classification in U.S. higher education.
“There are fewer than 200 universities in the nation that have that classification,” he said. “That’s how far we’ve come.”
Developed through research and listening sessions involving students, faculty and staff, Defy Definition is built around five pillars:
- Take smart risks
- Do work that matters
- Roll up your sleeves
- Thrive on your terms
- Show up for each other
University leaders said the goal was not to invent a new identity, but to clearly articulate one that already exists.
Chief Marketing Officer John Veilleux described the campaign as the University’s first opportunity to pause and tell its story intentionally.
“This is a story that needs to be told,” Veilleux said. “If you look at our medical schools, the veterinarian school, Dreamscape Learn, Rowan Online, our growth and expansion has been impressive by any measure. People have been doing incredible things, and this campaign is our first chance to stop and show the world what’s really happening at Rowan.”
That sense of energy and momentum was visible throughout the launch. More than 20 colleges, programs and campus partners hosted interactive experiences, transforming the Student Center Expansion into a hands-on, multisensory space. Academic stations throughout the space highlighted research, teaching and innovation across disciplines, while live music, food trucks and exclusive Defy Definition merchandise added to the celebratory feel.
Showing up
Students said the event captured the spirit of the message.
Defying definition “means going outside your boundaries,” said Lennox Van Walsen, a junior double‑majoring in geography and environmental and sustainability studies. “To expect the unexpected and adapt.”
In fact, Van Walsen said, the event was beyond their expectations and they were impressed by how many students and programs were involved.
For others, Defy Definition came down to confidence and self‑direction. Sophomore finance major Connor Galvin summed it up simply: “Step out of the box. Don’t let people define you.”
Cayla Gordon, a sophomore mathematics education major, said the message resonated with the reality of student life. “Be you, but juggle more than one thing,” Gordon said. “Do the extra mile, take the extra step.”
Student Trustee Ali Ishage told the crowd which pillar resonated with him most: show up for each other. “While the statement is simple, I believe it is the most important thing when it comes to thriving in this life.”
He encouraged students to act on that idea daily. “Call the friend you haven’t spoken to in a while,” Ishage said. “Show up to the class you were thinking about skipping.”
When a smart risk pays off
Chancellor Tony Lowman connected the campaign to Rowan’s past and present.
“I want to acknowledge the first person who defied definition for the University, and that’s Henry Rowan. He defied definition by making a $100 million bet on a small college in southern New Jersey,” Lowman said. “And today, Rowan is one of only two schools in the entire country with three medical schools offering M.D., D.O. and D.V.M. degrees.”
As the University continues to grow, leaders say Defy Definition will remain a consistent platform for telling Rowan’s story—one rooted not just in milestones, but in people.
Houshmand ended his speech by highlighting Rowan’s rapid growth—not the buildings and programs, but the students themselves—noting that enrollment has more than doubled in just over a decade. “I keep saying to people,” he added, “you ain’t seen nothing yet!”
