Lt. Governor Dr. Dale Caldwell delivers keynote during 21st annual Rosa Parks Luncheon on Feb. 24

Rowan University’s Africana Studies program hosted the 21st annual Rosa Parks Luncheon on Feb. 24, bringing hundreds of students, faculty, staff and community members to the Eynon Ballroom for an afternoon of reverence and remembrance. The program featured opening remarks from Rowan University President Ali A. Houshmand and Ric Edelman College Dean Nawal Ammar.

“This event is part of Rowan’s celebration of Black History Month, an annual reminder of individuals whose courage, conviction and perseverance changed the course of history,” said President Houshmand. “Today, we recognize that legacy as a call to action.”

Rowan welcomed Lt. Governor Dr. Dale Caldwell, New Jersey’s fourth Lieutenant Governor and 35th Secretary of State, as keynote speaker. As a seasoned professor, Dr. Caldwell opened his remarks with a quiz, prompting guests to think about the first Black president, governors, college graduates and other figures, highlighting the importance of preserving Black history. He also spoke to the economy and supporting small businesses, first generation home ownership, tourism in the “Garden State” and stressed the importance of workforce development, commending Rowan for its efforts.

“We have the capacity and the identity to do things very differently,” said Dr. Caldwell of the future of New Jersey and its role in the rest of the country. “Even with all the challenges, I think it actually presents an opportunity to really use the brilliance we have in this state to take (New Jersey) to the next level.”

Serving alongside Governor Mikie Sherril, Dr. Caldwell brings decades of leadership experience across government, education, community development, faith and business. Prior to his election, Dr. Caldwell served as President of Centenary University, where he led transformative initiatives focused on access, innovation, workforce development and student success.

During his remarks, Dr. Caldwell also underscored the new Governor’s administration is focused on listening to the ideas of New Jerseyans, emphasized the role small business plays in driving the economy, and encouraged students to be optimistic and excited about the future. Caldwell emphasized the importance of remembering Black history, in honor of the 100th anniversary of Black History month.

“We have to remember those who died for the right to vote, for the right to have your own business, for you to even come to a university. We need to build on that and know that if we focus, if we’re willing to work hard, there is absolutely nothing we can’t accomplish.”

Event organizers presented Dr. Caldwell with the Rosa Parks award and gift basket. In closing, Vice President for TD Bank and Rowan Alumnus Jennifer Carter-Lawyer presented an affirmation and Rev. Keith D. Dickens provided a benediction.

Proceeds from the luncheon support the Dr. Gary Hunter Scholarship, established in honor of the late historian, educator and campus leader.
