Drawing wide domestic acclaim – and more than 100,000 visitors since its March opening – the Jean & Ric Edelman Fossil Park & Museum of Rowan University (EFM)  is also earning international recognition with a spot in the annual roundup of the top 10 architectural structures of the year by United Kingdom Architecture News.

The list, which highlights the most influential and widely read architecture stories of the year, includes Ennead Architects-designed EFM, which sits atop the park’s 65-acre fossil preserve in Mantua Township, its 44,000-square-foot structure a bold statement of sustainability and storytelling.

Editors commented on how the museum’s distinctive architecture frames views of the quarry and 66-million-year-old sediment layers – a window into Earth’s deep past.

In a story posted Dec. 15, UK Architecture News noted that “the museum is located on a remarkable geological site where sedimentary layers preserve evidence of the asteroid impact that caused the mass extinction of the dinosaurs… A wider story of planetary reckoning, discovery and future-facing action is built upon this active quarry, where people of all ages dig for actual fossils alongside scientists.”

Other high-profile projects featured in the piece include the spaceship-like Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum in China and a high-rise tower in Tbilisi, Georgia (former Soviet Union).
