Rowan University researchers awarded prestigious Google Academic Research Award

Ying “Gina” Tang, Ph.D., and Nidhal C. Bouaynaya, Ph.D., have received Google’s inaugural Google Academic Research Award (GARA). The program supports innovative research in computing and technology with the potential to address global challenges.
Tang, a professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), and Bouaynaya, associate vice president for artificial intelligence (AI) and professor of ECE, will receive $100,000 in funding and mentorship from Google to advance their research on “Personalized Instruction and Need-aware Gaming (PING).”
This project, in partnership with Camden City School District, creates AI tutors and peer companions for K-12 educational games. These AI assistants offer personalized scaffolding and emotional encouragement, helping students build confidence and take more control of their own learning. As one of 21 such awards made nationally, the project aligns with Google's commitment to responsible innovation in making education equitable, accessible and effective using AI.
“We are thrilled to receive this award and partner with Google to develop AI solutions to improve educational outcomes for all learners,” said Tang, who also serves as associate director for workforce development at Rowan’s Machine, Artificial Intelligence & Virtual Reality Center (MAVRC). “This project has the potential to transform learning experiences by providing personalized support tailored to their unique needs.”
The GARA program is a global initiative supporting 95 projects led by 143 researchers from 115 institutions in 34 countries. Rowan University is proud to be among the institutions contributing to this important effort.
