Creating safer campuses together

Creating safer campuses together

Dear University Community:

This past weekend, Rowan’s Department of Public Safety alerted the Rowan community to separate off-campus incidents through our Rowan Alert system.

While neither of these incidents pose a continued threat to Glassboro or Rowan, they understandably raise concerns about safety, both throughout Glassboro and Rowan’s main campus.

Safety measures increased
In all of the communities that host our campuses, Rowan and local police professionals work together to enhance safety. In recent years, a majority of troubling incidents have involved non-Rowan students interacting with our students. To address this, Rowan Public Safety and Glassboro Police have expanded joint measures to bring a larger and more visible presence to areas where large groups often gather. In addition, we will continue efforts to hold students accountable for their actions, including those living off campus, to reduce the poor choices that lead to unfortunate behavior and worse.

Students can make a difference
Of course, we need our students’ help, as well, to create a safer environment for everyone. Please consider the following:

  • Avoid off-campus parties, particularly those that attract large numbers of individuals and potential trouble.
  • If you choose to join off-campus social events, attend those that are invitation-only. Do not attend social functions where you do not know the host.
  • If you see something out of the ordinary, report it immediately. You may be saving a friend from harm.
  • Do not let people you don’t know into campus housing. You will be held accountable for their actions.
  • If you do encounter someone who is acting suspiciously, call 9-1-1.

Support for safety and well-being
Incidents such as what happened last weekend can trigger worry and fear. To maintain our commitment to well-being, the University is prepared to help those who feel distressed by troubling news. Resources are available through our Dean of Students Office and The Wellness Center. To access counseling and psychological services, call 856-256-4333.

Faculty who notice a student who is struggling are encouraged to submit a CARES Report. Professionals will contact the student and offer support.

Incidents such as these can affect all in the University community. Employees in need of support may consider contacting the Rowan Employee Advisory Service.

If you have questions, concerns or suggestions about these matters, please contact the Department of Public Safety at 856-256-4922 or the Office of the Vice President of Student Life/Dean of Students: deanofstudents@rowan.edu.

Sincerely,

Kevin S. Koett
