Promoting a sense of global citizenship and responsibility
Dear Rowan University Community,
This past weekend, we learned about truly horrific terrorist attacks in Israel targeting both soldiers and civilians, including infants and families in their homes. As a result, war is once again compounding the suffering of people living in the region. Hundreds have died and thousands more were injured or have gone missing.
We are half a world away. Even so, our multicultural and multinational community is touched by the ripple effects of such atrocities. We offer our heartfelt sympathy for our friends, family members and colleagues impacted by this unfolding tragedy and we condemn these terrible acts.
Sadly, war and terrorism anywhere remain constant threats to humanity and progress. That’s one of the many reasons why institutions of higher education like ours must promote peace and a sense of global citizenship and responsibility.
The Rowan Center for Study of the Holocaust, Genocide & Human Rights and the Hollybush Institute for Global Peace & Security are both examples of the essential work underway to understand the past, educate the present and point us toward a more secure, compassionate future.
As always, our community stands with those struggling to cope with the emotional fallout of these events. Resources are available through our Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, the Dean of Students Officeand The Wellness Center. To access counseling and psychological services, call 856-256-4333.
Please continue to keep those affected in your hearts. We all can show kindness to neighbors near and far.
Very truly yours,
Ali A. Houshmand
President
