Former State Senate President Steve Sweeney to present ‘A Vision for New Jersey’ in talk at Rowan

Former New Jersey State Senate President Steve Sweeney will present “A Vision for New Jersey” during a talk on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Rowan University.

Steve SweeneyPresented by the Rowan Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship, the talk by Sweeney (at right) begins at 7 p.m. in the Eynon Ballroom of the Chamberlain Student Center, 201 Mullica Hill Road, Glassboro, N.J.

According to RIPPAC Founding Director Ben Dworkin, the institute is seeking to host public talks for every candidate seriously considering running to become New Jersey’s next governor. The next gubernatorial election is slated for Nov. 4, 2025. Gov. Phil Murphy was sworn in for his second and final term as the state’s 56th governor in January of 2022.

Representing the 3rd Legislative District, Sweeney, a Democrat, served for 20 years in the New Jersey Senate, including a record 12 years as Senate president. After losing his 2021 reelection bid, he became chair of the advisory board of the Steve Sweeney Center for Public Policy at Rowan.

An ironworker by trade, Sweeney served from 1997 to 2010 on the Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders–the last 12 years as director.

Sweeney’s talk is co-sponsored by the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, the Departments of Law & Justice Studies, History, and Political Science & Economics, the John H. Martinson Honors College, and the American Studies program.
