In case of emergency, be prepared

We don’t know what led to last night’s horrific mass shooting on the campus of Michigan State University, but whenever there is such tragic news in the media, it seems too close to home and too likely to happen anywhere.

The incident triggered an immediate response, university alerts and warnings to evacuate or shelter in place. While we mourn the loss of life and hold hope for those who were injured, the shooting serves as a reminder that we all must be prepared for such an emergency, no matter where we are.

First, it’s critically important that students, faculty and staff receive alerts during an emergency through a text to your cell phone. If you have not already done so, please enroll in the Rowan Alert system, so that you can receive warnings and safety instructions from the Rowan University Department of Public Safety. Please remember: everyone is required to register for this critical communication vehicle.

Second, know what to do if an active shooter is nearby. Everyone can learn life-saving information from the active shooter training sessions offered regularly by our Public Safety professionals. The department also offers training for campus groups or departments. To schedule a training session for your group, contact Public Safety

In the meantime, a quick reference guide compiled by the Department of Homeland Security is available here. Please always be aware of your surroundings.

If you do encounter someone who is acting suspiciously, such as trying to hide or attempting to conceal a weapon, call 9-1-1. Be prepared to provide a description and location. Take note of the person’s age, personal appearance, clothing and weapon, if known. Your actions could prevent a tragedy.

We all hope to never experience such a situation ourselves, but it’s important to be prepared. We also recognize this is disturbing to think about. If you are struggling to cope, please know you’re not alone and we have resources available for you. To learn more, please contact The Wellness Center

Be well, care for each other and keep Michigan State University students in your hearts and prayers.
