Dr. Joanne Kaiser-Smith named President of the American College of Osteopathic Internists
Dr. Joanne Kaiser-Smith, the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, has been named the President of the American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI) for 2022-2023. The ACOI is a national professional organization representing osteopathic internal medicine physicians and subspecialists. She has been an ACOI member for over 35 years and earned the distinction of Fellow (FACOI) in 1994.
Board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (AOBIM), Dr. Kaiser-Smith is also certified in Geriatric Medicine by the AOBIM. Dr. Kaiser-Smith is a School of Osteopathic Medicine graduate and has trained nearly 500 residents during her career. She has received numerous honors for her work in the field, most recently being voted Mentor of the Year by the American Osteopathic Association in 2021.
Commenting on the upcoming year, she said, “Mentorship is so important to me, so I am excited that our focus for 2023 at the ACOI is on recruiting new student and resident members. We have already laid the groundwork for great student involvement with the launching of a new national Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association (SOIMA) and the students are already so enthusiastic about being involved. As the sixth woman president leading the ACOI, I have had great role models who came before me – those who mentored me! All through my career I have taken it upon myself to help women rise with me in this profession and help young people become successful physicians. I am looking forward to leading the ACOI as another opportunity to do that.”
