Dr. Joshua S. Coren named ACOFP Family Medicine Educator of the Year
The American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) has honored Joshua S. Coren, DO, MBA, FACOFP, as the Osteopathic Family Medicine Educator of the Year, during the recent ACOFP 59th Annual Convention and Scientific Seminars. The award recognizes individuals who exemplify the osteopathic family medicine profession's highest standards of excellence in teaching and who have made efforts to advance the academic achievement of osteopathic students and residents.
Dr. Coren is the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs and a professor of Family Medicine at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (RowanSOM), where he also leads the department of Family Medicine. He was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society at RowanSOM in 2018, and has been recognized for his achievements through other awards, including ACOFP's Emerging Leader Award in 2010, as well as being voted one of South Jersey Magazine's top physicians by his peers and readers for several years.
A true mentor and leader, Dr. Coren prides himself on the professional growth of his students, residents and colleagues, mentoring eight faculty members to academic promotion during his time as chair of one of the largest osteopathic Family Medicine departments in the country. He served as medical director for the first osteopathic medical school onsite COVID-19 vaccine clinic to integrate osteopathic medical students, nursing students and volunteers to provide over 60,000 vaccinations. Dr. Coren is also principal investigator for two federal grants focusing on training osteopathic medical students in underserved communities and has worked as a co-director of the International Primary Care Education Alliance, leading efforts to train China's physician workforce in primary care education.
“RowanSOM is honored that Dr. Coren has been chosen for this prestigious award,” said RowanSOM Dean Dr. Thomas Cavalieri. “His consistent leadership as an educator was never more evident than when he guided both our educational and clinical response to the COVID pandemic, which became a model for others in our state to follow.”
