CMSRU names new associate dean and assistant dean for graduate medical education
CAMDEN, NJ – Annette C. Reboli, MD, dean of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, announced today the appointments of Amit R. T. Joshi, MD, FACS, as associate dean for graduate medical education (GME) and Andrew Nyce, MD, as assistant dean for GME.
“As GME at CMSRU/Cooper University Health Care (CUHC) continues to expand and evolve, we prioritized bringing on new leaders to oversee our 46 residency and fellowship programs, and the nearly 400 trainees enrolled in them,” explained Dean Reboli. “We are so pleased to have Drs. Joshi and Nyce as our first associate and assistant deans, respectively, for GME. They bring with them administrative, operational and organizational leadership that I believe will help usher our graduate medical education program to the next level of excellence.”
Dr. Joshi joins CMSRU from Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia where he was the residency program director and vice chair for academic affairs for the department of surgery. As CMSRU/CUHC’s first associate dean for GME, he aims to position the institutions’ graduate medical education programs as regional and national destinations for training.
“CMSRU/Cooper has outstanding faculty with deep experience, excellent program infrastructure, and the drive to be among the nation’s premiere destinations for residency and fellowship training programs,” said Dr. Joshi. “I look forward to working with the faculty, as well as the outstanding leaders at the hospital and medical school, to help continue to grow opportunities across the educational continuum and have a positive impact on the health of the community.”
An accomplished general surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive hernia repair, Dr. Joshi holds leadership positions with many professional organizations, including the American Board of Surgery; the Association of Program Directors in Surgery; and the American College of Surgeons (ACS), where he is immediate past president of the Philadelphia chapter. He recently co-chaired the Planning Committee of the Coalition for Physician Accountability, a multi-organizational group working to advance health care and promote professional accountability by improving the quality, efficiency, and continuity of the education, training, and assessment of physicians. The Coalition’s members are the national organizations responsible for the oversight, education and assessment of medical students and physicians throughout their medical careers. Dr. Joshi is a graduate of Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and completed his residency training in general surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of SCORE, the national curriculum for general surgery.
Dr. Nyce is an associate professor of emergency medicine, and Vice Chairman and Vice Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at CMSRU/CUHC. He completed his emergency medicine residency at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School/CUHC, serving as Chief Resident, and joined Cooper’s clinical staff as a faculty physician in the Emergency Medicine Department in 1999.
Dr. Nyce is well-regarded by medical students and residents, alike, for his excellence in teaching and outstanding clinical skills. He served as the Emergency Medicine Program Director for 11 years. Dr. Nyce has chaired multiple internal working committees dedicated to improving health care access, patient care, and GME at Cooper. He is a member of the Society of Academic Medicine and the Council of Residency Directors, Emergency Medicine, serving on multiple committees for both organizations.
A partnership between Rowan University and The Cooper Health System, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) opened in summer 2012 in Camden. It was the first new medical school in New Jersey in more than 35 years and the only four-year M.D. degree-granting medical school in southern New Jersey. Today, nearly 450 medical students are enrolled at CMSRU.
