Another step toward equity and justice

Rowan University students protested in last summer's 'Nine Mile March for Black Lives.'

Yesterday’s verdict in the Derek Chauvin murder trial brings our nation to another critical moment in our history. How we respond will determine the future we make for ourselves and generations to come. The jury’s verdict is an answer to specific questions about one tragic, terrible incident that took George Floyd’s life. But hard questions about how we treat each other—and hold ourselves accountable—persist. We must continue to have difficult conversations about ensuring equity and justice in our society and beyond.

As Rowan University students speak out on their own and our institution takes action to serve and support these critical social values, I am humbled and proud of the compassion and courage our community continues to demonstrate. Each step of progress we make toward being more equitable and inclusive is a step forward for everyone.

As a university, we are called to better understand our world and make possible a better life in it. Knowledge is not enough to solve problems. Action—even the seemingly smallest gesture on behalf of the marginalized—proves our character.

Please join me in supporting and working alongside those in our community who are speaking courageously to protect the vulnerable and build a more just society. What we do—and choose not to do—will make a difference.

Respectfully,
