U.S. News & World Report today ranked Rowan University’s undergraduate engineering program #17 for 2021, a four-place bump in just one year, in the magazine’s much-watched “Best Colleges” issue.

The magazine, which for decades has ranked colleges and universities in a variety of categories, scored Rowan #95 among Public National Universities and #187 among National Universities. Rowan was also ranked #128 among Best Value Schools and #191 for Social Mobility, a 13-place pickup.

Digging down, U.S. News ranked Rowan’s Mechanical Engineering program #13 in the nation and its Electrical Engineering program #16 among colleges that don’t offer doctorates. It ranked Rowan’s Computer Science program #249 and programs through the Rohrer College of Business #308.

Dr. Stephanie Farrell, interim dean of the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, said it is gratifying, but not surprising, that the college’s score through U.S. News is trending higher.

“One of the hallmarks of our undergraduate program, the experiential, medical school-inspired clinics, may well be a factor,” Farrell said. “In educating the engineers of tomorrow, we train them actively today.”

U.S. News staggers the release of some of its college ranking data throughout the year but last year named Rowan #121 in Best Colleges for Veterans and #95 in Top Public Schools.

U.S. News in March released its 2021 study of America’s Best Graduate Schools, which ranked several Rowan schools, colleges and programs as among the best in the nation.

Included in that annual study were the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, which ranked #94-122 in Best Medical Schools: Research and Primary Care categories, out of 188 schools and programs considered.

The magazine also ranked Rowan’s Master’s in Nursing program #179-236 out of 578 schools nationwide; the Rohrer College of Business’s part-time MBA program at #207 out of 272 schools considered; the College of Education at #196-255 among Best Education Schools out of 393; and ranked the University’s master’s degree in Clinical Psychology #193 out of 231 programs reviewed.

In January, U.S. News ranked Rowan’s online programs among the nation’s best, listing them as follows:

  • Bachelor's degree #325
  • Master of Business Administration #176
  • Graduate business degrees (non-MBA) #168
  • Master's degree in Criminal Justice #72
  • Master’s degree in Education #224
  • Master's degree in Engineering #86
