Standing together against injustice

Standing together against injustice

We are a nation in pain. Grief and outrage about the horrific death of George Floyd in Minneapolis have combined to plunge some of our largest cities into chaos. But beyond the breaking point that we see in the media, we all live with the same potential to descend into despair and upheaval.

We must do better, not just to redeem the senseless loss of human life but to reset the foundations of our lives together.

Rowan University is a community whose values compel us to stand up for the vulnerable, the voiceless, the rejected. Because of our values, we are committed to respect differences, foster understanding and dispel ignorance. Because of our values, we support peaceful protest and freedom of speech. Because of our values, we condemn violence and hate, no matter the form they take.

This week, the University’s Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) is continuing its vital work by hosting virtual discussions about systematic racism and oppression and the steps we are taking to disrupt hate. This pivotal moment begs for brave conversation and clear vision, especially as we support the honorable work of law enforcement and denounce the few who tarnish their profession.

The pain of injustice is real and it demands relief. In the fog of outrage, the threat of turmoil is one decision away. Rowan University stands today to choose courage, compassion and community leadership.

As we move through summer and begin to resume activity and contact after pandemic restrictions, we will continue to support meaningful discussion within and around our community. Members of DEI and Student Affairs will keep working with students and employees to build understanding and positive relationships.

While the bombastic and violent attract attention, we hope Rowan’s kindness and courage become a model that attracts others to emulate our resolve.

I encourage every member of our community and those who observe Rowan University as a steward of public service and leadership to stand with us. Together in pain and loss, we will demonstrate our commitment to peace and justice, kindness and hope, honor and character.

Sincerely,
Ali A. Houshmand, Ph.D.
President
