Kaplan Test Prep, the country’s premier provider of preparation for standardized and entrance exams for higher education as well as profession licensing tests for physicians, has named Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (RowanSOM) one of America’s ‘Best 10 Osteopathic Medical Schools.’

In announcing its rankings, Kaplan noted that the average pre-med student applies for acceptance to 16 medical schools. More than ever before, those students are applying to at least one of America’s 35 osteopathic medical schools. Last year, over 20,900 students applied for acceptance to an osteopathic medical school and, today, one in every four medical students in this country is studying to become a doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO).

“With so many schools to choose from and so many men and women seeking entry, it’s especially gratifying – but not surprising – to earn this designation,” said Dr. Thomas Cavalieri, the Dean of RowanSOM. “For more than 40 years, we have trained skillful, compassionate, culturally competent and diverse physicians and scientists who will become leaders in their communities and who will improve the health in New Jersey and throughout the nation.

“With its focus on primary care, osteopathic medicine brings to the exam table what the nation needs – a holistic focus on wellness that incorporates a patient’s mind, body and spirit,” Dr. Cavalieri added.

That helps to explain the popularity of osteopathic medical education among those aspiring to become physicians. Over the past decade applications to osteopathic medical schools have nearly doubled. The resulting competition for acceptance has increased significantly and RowanSOM is no exception. More than 5,000 applied for the 200 spots available in the medical school’s most recent entering class.

RowanSOM also stands out among osteopathic medical schools for the strong research component and multiple dual degree programs it offers. Students have the opportunity to pair their DO degree with a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from Rowan’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, a Master of Business Administration from the Rowan University Rohrer College of Business, a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers School of Law-Camden, or a Master of Public Health from the Rutgers School of Public Health.
