Rowan University hosts 16th annual Pumpkin Chunkin' competition
The Rowan University student section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers will host its 16th annual Pumpkin Chunkin' competition on Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m., at the South Jersey Technology Park, 107 Gilbreth Parkway, Mullica Hill (off the Rt. 55 exit).
Last year, more than 20 teams from universities, high schools and colleges from the tri-state area competed, and more than 400 people attended the event. To date, teams competing in the Marvel vs. DC-themed competition are coming from Rowan University, the Glassboro Fire Department, Temple University, LEAP Academy University Charter School, Cape May County Technical School, Burlington County Institute of Technology, Glassboro High School, Millville High School and the Washington Township High School Science League.
The competition involves teams of up to seven students launching pumpkins across a field, using trebuchets that they have spent a few months designing and building.
Pumpkin Chunkin' challenges prospective and current engineering students to work together to build a machine according to certain specifications to develop their engineering design skills. It also provides an opportunity for like-minded students from across the region to connect with and learn from each other while they have fun launching pumpkins.
The day also will feature a faculty/staff pumpkin-carving challenge, a costume contest, food trucks and more.
Contact ASME@rowan.edu for more details or to register to compete.
