ACE fellow Dr. Howard G. Brown comes to Rowan

Dr. Howard G. Brown, a full professor of history at Binghamton University, SUNY, is spending the fall semester at Rowan where he’ll interact with senior administrators as part of the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows program.

Designed to ease the transition for tenured faculty from classroom teaching to administrative careers, the program will enable Brown to study the intricacies of university management from top Rowan educator-administrators including President Ali Houshmand, Provost James Newell and others.

Brown sought to complete his fellowship at Rowan because of its impressive growth, dedication to both access and excellence, and rapid emergence as a national research university, , including its 2017 designation as a Carnegie-classified doctoral level research university.

“Dr. Brown is an accomplished educator with impeccable credentials,” Houshmand said. “While the ACE Fellows program was created to provide senior faculty an opportunity to advance their careers by interacting with administrators, I’m looking forward to Rowan faculty and administrators benefitting from the experience as well.”

Brown holds a Ph.D. from Balliol College, Oxford University, and a Master of Arts from York University in Toronto. He became a full professor in 2004, served two terms as chair of the Department of History, and has extensive experience in faculty governance at Binghamton University.

“Rowan is clearly a university on the rise and I expect my semester here, under the mentorship of President Houshmand, Provost Newell and others, to be singularly rewarding,” Brown said.

Dr. Sherri Lind Hughes, director of the ACE Fellows program and a 2002-03 Fellow, said host institutions play an invaluable role in helping to prepare the next generation of higher education leaders.

“An ACE Fellow chooses an institution not only for its rigorous academic environment but for its strong desire to invest in the future of higher education leadership,” she said.

Forty-three Fellows, nominated by senior administrators at their home institutions, comprise the 2018−19 cohort at colleges and universities across the nation. Nearly 2,000 higher education leaders have participated in the ACE Fellows Program over the past five decades, with more than 80 percent of Fellows having served as senior leaders of colleges and universities.

The ACE Fellows Program combines retreats, interactive learning opportunities, campus visits and placement at another higher education institution to condense years of on-the-job experience and skills development into a single academic year. The Fellows are included in the highest level of decision-making while participating in administrative activities at their host institutions. Time is also spent investigating a specified issue of benefit to their nominating institutions for implementation upon the Fellows’ return to campus at the conclusion of the Fellowship placement.
