Serving up sauce: Registration now open for Houshmand’s Hazardous Hot Sauce Cook-Off

If cooking with sauce—particularly hot sauce—is your forte, mark your calendar for Monday, Jan. 22.

That day, in celebration of National Hot Sauce Day, Rowan University and the Landmark Americana will present a cooking competition featuring foods that utilize Rowan President Ali A. Houshmand’s Hazardous Hot Sauce as a key ingredient.

The Houshmand’s Hazardous Hot Sauce Cook-Off, which runs 7-9 p.m. at Landmark Americana, is open to area cooks who develop homemade recipes that use the president’s signature sauce as a key component of a drink, appetizer, entrée, side dish or dessert. The cook-off also will have a Wild Card category for the most adventurous hot sauce chefs.

Cooks will bring their dishes to the Landmark Americana at 1 Mullica Hill Rd., Glassboro, where their culinary creations will be judged by a panel of judges, including Houshmand.

Launched in October, Houshmand’s Hazardous Hot Sauce is made from Houshmand’s secret recipe. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the hot sauce goes to scholarships for Rowan students in need. Thus far, more than $12,000 from the sale of the sauce and affiliated merchandise has been raised for student scholarships.  Nearly 1,200 jars of hot sauce alone have been sold.
