Rowan hosts ‘Explorer Sunday’ as part of 7th annual Philadelphia Science Festival

Rowan University will host a series of immersive, interactive and educational science-based activities on Sunday, April 23, as part of the 2017 Philadelphia Science Festival.

Created by The Franklin Institute in 2011, the Philadelphia Science Festival is an annual region-wide collaboration that explores the many ways that science and technology touch everyday lives. With more than 200 of the region’s most influential institutions, museums and cultural centers working together to produce innovative and engaging events, the Festival aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers and create homegrown citizen scientists. Organized and led by The Franklin Institute and presented by The Dow Chemical Company, the 2017 Festival packs more than 80 events into nine days (April 21-29) at such places as schools, restaurants and breweries, parks, libraries, museums and other neighborhood sites, many of them free.

As a silver sponsor and core collaborator, Rowan joins more than 200 partners in presenting hands-on events for participants of all ages.

Parking will be available in Lot 0, located off Bowe Boulevard on Rowan’s Glassboro campus (unless otherwise noted). Guests can participate in a number of events across the Glassboro campus and at the Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park in Mantua Township.

Sunday, April 23 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Science Hall

• Safely view the Sun up close outside Science Hall in white light through solar filter telescopes.
• Planetarium Show: Watch Astronaut and see what it takes to travel to space. The show’s schedule for this free event is 1, 1:30, 2, and 2:30 p.m.
• At 3 p.m., there will be an hour-long public show (to be announced), featuring 30 minutes of stargazing on the virtual sky and 30 minutes of immersive video on the dome screen. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children, seniors and Rowan students.

James Hall Room 1053 and 1056 - The Science Behind Human Movement

• Learn how electricity is used to monitor heart, muscles and nerves.
• Test your lung strength, balance and reaction time.
• Have your heart rate and blood pressure measured.

James Hall – Science for the Budding Scientist

• Families with young children ages 3 to 10 can enjoy a dozen hands-on experiments.

Science Hall - Astronomy Night at Rowan

Rowan also will participate in the Science Carnival at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia, on Sunday April 29, offering presentations on exercise; asteroids, meteorites, and the death of dinosaurs; reptiles; and sumo-wrestling robots.
