Things are frightful at the Virtual Reality Center at the South Jersey Technology Park at Rowan University in Mantua Township, New Jersey.

Through mid-November, the VR Center is offering two weeks of post-Halloween scares via two original experiences titled “The Rite.”

The 20- to 30-minute ventures into fear-land feature highly interactive trips that weave through catacombs and mines, tackle ghouls and ghosts, and demand some creative thinking . . . and courage.

“The Rite” offers a solo VR experience and a three-player adventure. In the first, a player works to conquer an ancient flesh monster, trying to solve puzzles at three levels (Mine, Sewer and Monster) with the help of a head-mounted VR system called HTC Vive. In the second, a team guided by a ghost travels a sewer system, mine and more trying to avoid evils displayed in a 10-screen VR system.

Students in the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering designed both programs.

The VR Center is open to the Rowan community and the public on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The games are recommended for people 15 years and older. The cost for the solo experience is $10, and the total cost for the group experience is $10. Email vrcenter@rowan.edu to schedule a visit.
