Rowan Theatre stages bold new production of insightful comedy THE WOMEN
The Department of Theatre & Dance at Rowan University continues its mainstage season with a bold new staging of The Women, Clare Boothe Luce's comic masterpiece that parodies society's expectations of women. Presented in collaboration with Philadelphia’s EgoPo Classic Theater, performances are from February 25 – 28 in Tohill Theatre on the university’s Glassboro campus.
Directed by Lane Savadove, Rowan faculty member and EgoPo’s artistic director, this humorous social commentary about the pampered lives and power struggles of Manhattan socialites dissects traditional marriage and reveals truths behind the artifice.
“The play critiques a system that says the value of women is in their looks and their behavior,” Savadove states.
The director and his production team take a minimal approach but celebrate the theatricality inherent in the Luce’s script while also exposing the emotional richness that lingers below the surface of these characters.
“It’s a much deeper, more serious play then people think,” Savadove notes, “but still very funny.”
A unique all-female acting ensemble combines Rowan theatre majors with some of Philadelphia’s best actresses, such as Barrymore Award winners Cheryl Williams and Genevieve Perrier, Karina Balfour, Mary Lee Bednarek, Elisabeth Hostetter, Rebecca Joy, Melanie Julian, and Lee Minora.
Rowan students in the cast include Lauren Ackermann, Courtney Bundens, Kristie Ecke, Ileana Fortuno, Beatrice Hemmings, Courtney Jarmush, Emily Lewis, Colleen Murphy, Sam Price, Julie Roberts, and Kylie Westerbeck.
Performances are February 25, 26 and 27 at 8 pm, and February 27 and 28 at 3 pm. Tohill Theatre is located in Bunce Hall on the campus of Rowan University, Route 322 in Glassboro, NJ.
