University's spring Arts schedule offers eclectic mix
The full range of artistic endeavors - by Rowan students, faculty, and guests - is on display with the spring 2015 schedule of events presented by the College of Performing Arts and Rowan University Art Gallery.
Starting things off is the gallery’s latest exhibit, Simulate – Permeate, running from Jan.20 to March 7, with a public reception and artist talk on Feb. 11 from 5-7 p.m. Curated by Mat Tomezsko, program manager and curator at InLiquid Art & Design, the exhibition features the work of eight Philadelphia-based artists and artist groups making innovative use of new media that collectively examine concepts of materiality, experience, and authorship in technology-based contemporary art.
From March 23 – May 16, the gallery hosts Chromography: Writing in Color, a two-person exhibition of works that explore concepts of translation and symbol-based communication. The reception and artist talk is April 9 from 5-7 p.m. In addition to the exhibitions, there is a special one-day Philly Science Week presentation on April 26 from 2-5 p.m. Working in collaboration with the College of Engineering, the gallery presents a series of 3D animations in the CAVE at the South Jersey Technology Park.
Information on all gallery programs is available at www.rowan.edu/artgallery or by calling 856-256-4521. Programming at Rowan University Art Gallery is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
The newly-christened Marie Rader Presenting Series offers an array of experiences in music, theatre, dance and more throughout the semester. Named in honor of the late arts advocate, the inspiration for Rowan’s Marie F. Rader Memorial Fund for the arts, the series offers four evenings that advance the fund’s goal of bringing outside artists to campus.
Brooklyn-based Concrete Temple Theatre is a multi-disciplinary company that presents Gepetto: Extraordinary Extremities, a new production that shares more than a character’s name and profession with a fairy tale. The play also focuses on a longing for magic and a wish for a transformative power that could kindle life where it is lacking. The performance is Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. in Tohill Theatre.
From Sinatra to the Stones: The Gala Concert at the 45th Annual Rowan Jazz Festival features renowned trombonist Mike Davis, who has performed with Ol’ Blue Eyes and The Rolling Stones, and many others in-between. The concert, which includes Rowan University faculty and students, is Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. in Pfleeger Concert Hall. This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. LeeSaar The Company, established in New York City in 2000, uses the different disciplines and training of theatre and dance to create original dance performances. At Rowan, they offer an “Open Rehearsal” on March 27 at 8 p.m. in Pfleeger Concert Hall. The series concludes with the Grammy Award-winning Afro Bop Alliance on April 24 at 8 p.m. in Pfleeger Concert Hall. Afro Bop’s influences come from the musical styles of many different cultures fused together under the umbrella of “Latin” or “Latin Jazz” while adding each member’s experiences to forge a unique sound.
Tickets for performances in the series are $15, general admission; and $12, seniors/non-Rowan students/staff/alumni. Rowan student tickets are free with valid ID. Tickets can be purchased online at rowan.tix.com. For additional information, email arts@rowan.edu.
The College of Performing Arts schedule, featuring performances from the departments of Music and Theatre & Dance, begins with the aforementioned 45th Annual Rowan Jazz Festival. Aside from the gala concert, the three-day festival (Feb. 11 – 13) features daily clinics with guest Mike Davis and Rowan faculty, performances, and adjudications sessions for middle and high school jazz ensembles from throughout the region.
For more information on daytime programming, contact festival director Denis DiBlasio at 856-256-4500, ext. 3528 or via email at diblasio@rowan.edu.
