Dr. Sreekant Murthy joins Rowan University research community

Rowan University recently appointed Dr. Sreekant Murthy as chief research compliance officer, responsible for ensuring that the University complies with all federal, state and local research laws and regulations.

With more than 40 years of experience in research, research compliance and research development, Murthy will work to further enhance research opportunities and build the reputation of Rowan University as a leader in education and research. 

Prior to joining Rowan, Murthy was a professor of medicine and senior associate vice provost for research at Drexel University, Philadelphia. During his four decades at Drexel, Murthy worked directly on promoting the growth of the University’s research enterprise, overseeing all aspects of regulatory compliance for research. He played an instrumental role in the development of multidisciplinary strategic initiatives and assembled teams of faculty to brand and market the research strengths of both the faculty and Drexel’s entire research enterprise.

During his career, Murthy has contributed extensively to the field of gastroenterology. He collaborated with pharmaceutical companies to assist in testing and developing gastrointestinal anti-inflammatory drugs. He also trained 45 research and postdoctoral fellows from the United States and abroad.

Murthy, of Sewell, N.J., received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Mysore University, India; a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Bangalore University, India; and a doctorate in pharmacognosy from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.

“Rowan University’s research portfolio is expanding rapidly,” Murthy said. “My vision is to provide leadership from this office by facilitating a collaborative atmosphere through shared governance and responsibility that fosters commitment to compliance.  A strong compliance program embedded in the research enterprise endorsed by the research and academic community will preserve the public trust in what we do and enhance the reputation of our academic and research enterprise.”

In 2013, the State of New Jersey designated Rowan University its second comprehensive public research institution. Rowan plans to grow its sponsored funding from $24 million to $100 million in 10 years, with a strong emphasis on research at the intersection of science, engineering, medicine and business. Rowan is committed to conducting research that focuses on real-world problems with an eye to bringing products to market.
