James Hall dedication set for April 25 at Rowan University
April 5, 2012
Rowan University’s Education Hall will officially become Dr. Herman D. James Hall on Wednesday, April 25, at 2 p.m. as the University holds a ceremony at the hall to honor the legacy of Rowan’s late president.
James, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 67, retired in 1998 after 15 extraordinary years as Rowan’s fifth president. Under his leadership, the University received the $100 million, transformative gift from Henry and Betty Rowan and became Rowan University. Additionally, he established the doctoral program in educational leadership in Rowan’s College of Education, which was the first doctoral program offered by a New Jersey state college.
Known for his love of students and college life, his visibility and accessibility to students, faculty and staff, his good humor, and his desire to create a close-knit, “family” atmosphere at the University, James returned to teaching after stepping down as president, spending another decade at Rowan as a distinguished professor. He retired in 2007.
Rowan’s Board of Trustees voted in February to rename Education Hall in James’ honor. Members of the James family will join Rowan students, faculty and staff at the dedication ceremony, which will include the unveiling of a sign outside the hall.
Additional background on James can be found on Rowan’s website at www.rowan.edu/president.
