Rowan names Mandayam head of South Jersey Technology Park

A professor of electrical and computer engineering, Mandayam, of Pitman, most recently served as chair of Electrical & Computer Engineering in Rowan’s highly ranked College of Engineering, holding that position from 2006 to 2011.

As executive director of the Mantua Township-based Technology Park, he manages the facility, which is a collaborative effort between the State of New Jersey and Rowan University to lead the economic revitalization of the region through an integrated strategy of technology transfer initiatives. The Technology Park is home to sponsored research labs and the Rohrer College of Business Incubator, among other operations. As associate provost for research, Mandayam is responsible for promoting, supporting, administering and facilitating the research, scholarly and creative activities of all faculty, staff and students at the University. 

A native of India, Mandayam earned a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering from Bangalore University, India. He also earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in electrical engineering (communications and signal processing) from Iowa State University.

He joined the Rowan faculty in 1997. Prior to coming to South Jersey, he was an assistant professor and research associate at Iowa State and an assistant lecturer at the R.V. College of Engineering in Bangalore. He also has served as a research consultant for GE-Global Research, John F. Welch Technology Centre in Bangalore, and a research associate for The National Academies, at NASA Stennis Space Center, Mississippi.

Mandayam is an active researcher and directs the Imaging and Virtual Reality Lab in the Technology Park, which has secured more than $4 million of research funding and houses Rowan’s Cave Automatic Virtual Environment, known as a CAVE^®. He has published more than 80 papers and has served as the advisor for more than 20 graduate students. He is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and a senior member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and is currently the vice president of publications for the IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society. He chairs the annual IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium, which is an established forum for sensor users and developers. He has been active on many academic and other committees at Rowan, where he has a long history of service.
