Rowan University’s Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. John Pastin, begins its season of performances with an All-Sousa concert on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 8 pm in Pfleeger Concert Hall.

While the evening will be a tribute to the legendary composer, Pastin notes that its “not what you might be thinking.” The centerpiece of the program will be Ira Hearshen’s four-movement work, Symphony on Themes of John Philip Sousa, presented in sections. Sousa’s original marches will be performed to show the thematic material, followed by the corresponding movement in the symphony. Hearshen’s composition, a popular piece for wind ensemble, is based on four well-known Sousa marches but with themes developed and presented in various styles to fit the requirements of a true symphony. The concert will, of course, end with the original “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Pastin, Lieutenant Commander and Conductor, US Navy Band (Retired), is chair of the Department of Music, a member of the faculty and Director of Bands. He came to the university in 1998 after a 30-year career in the United States Navy’s music program. In addition to touring the world with various Navy bands, he served as Conductor and Officer in Charge for the U.S. Navy Band from 1995-1998. He earned numerous awards and commendations for his service and musicianship, including the Legion of Merit presented by then-President Clinton.

Pfleeger Concert Hall is located in Wilson Hall on the campus of Rowan University, Route 322 in Glassboro. Admission is free and open to the public.
