The Rowan University Rec Center is sponsoring a “Socks for Soldiers” program to benefit men and women serving overseas. The program will run through October 31.

Socks are one of the basic items that troops are in need of and can make a big difference in their lives, according to Laurie Dwyer, assistant director of fitness and wellness at the Rec Center.

The Rec Center’s goal is to obtain 5,000 pairs of socks. Anyone wishing to contribute can do so by making a donation at the front desk of the Rec Center or dropping off packages of large or extra large mid-shin crew socks in the bin on the first floor.

The Community Service Committee at the Rec Center organizes several different programs every year, including this one.

“We aim to organize service projects that serve the community and promote wellness. The students select the projects we will work on and they felt strongly about this and a chance to give back to the people who have fought and are fighting for our country,” said Dwyer.
