The American Society of Mechanical Engineers – Rowan University chapter will hold its second annual Watermelon Propellin’ Competition on Friday, April 23, 2010, starting at 3 p.m. on the Rowan Hall Quad — the field between Rowan and Wilson Halls (off Bowe Boulevard, Glassboro).

Scattering the Rowan Hall Green with watermelon juice and seeds, four teams of Watermelon Propellin’ contestants will launch watermelons at various targets. Teams of two to 10 contestants design and construct their entirely human-powered catapult using springs or counterweights that are often six feet tall. As they target one large pirate ship and various treasure chests, one team will be eliminated each round, according to score, until one is left standing. The winners will receive various prizes.
