Spoken Word Artist Sarah Kay to perform at Rowan

Spoken Word Artist Sarah Kay will perform at Rowan University on Monday, Nov. 23, at 11:15 a.m. in the Pit of the Chamberlain Student Center.

Kay is the founder and co-director of Project V.O.I.C.E. (Vocal Outreach Into Creative Expression), a national movement that celebrates and inspires youth self-expression through spoken word poetry.

Her performance, which will be followed by two spoken word workshops for Rowan students, is sponsored by the University's Women's and Gender Studies Program and the Writing Arts Department's Harrah's Emerging Writers Series.

A native of New York City, Kay began performing her poetry at age 14 and quickly made herself at home at the Bowery Poetry Club, one of New York's most famous spoken word venues. In 2006, she joined the Bowery Poetry Club's Poetry Slam Team, NYC Urbana, and was the youngest poet to compete in the National Poetry Slam in Austin, Texas.

Kay has performed at venues around the world, including the United Nations, where she as a featured performer for the launch of the 2004 World Youth Report. She has performed side-by-side with Spoken Word superstars such as Beau Sia, Taylor Mali, Buddy Wakefield, and others. She was featured in the sixth season of the television series "Russel Simmons presents HBO Def Poetry Jam," where she performed her poem "Hands."

Kay founded Project V.O.I.C.E. in 2004.
