University-wide activities to mark Disability Awareness Week at Rowan
Events ranging from a wheelchair ballroom dancing demonstration to the University's annual Disability Mentoring Day will highlight Rowan University's observance of Disability Awareness Week, which runs Oct. 19-22.
The week is designed to help the University community be more aware of "the intellect, talents, abilities and contributions of students and employees with disabilities at Rowan," according to John Woodruff, interim director/coordinator of Disability Resources in Rowan's Academic Success Center.
The week's schedule includes:
Monday, Oct. 19
Disability Awareness Week Opening Ceremony
(Pit, Chamberlain Student Center, 12:30 p.m.)
The ceremony will include a presentation of Dedicated Professional Awards to members of the University community who are supporters of the disability community, as well as a proclamation from the Gloucester County Freeholders recognizing the week.
Wheelchair ballroom dancing
(Rec Center, 1:45 p.m.)
American Dance Wheels Foundation will give a performance, demonstration and lessons on wheelchair dancing.
Tuesday, Oct. 20
"Everything You Wanted to Know About Disability But Were Afraid to Ask"
(Room 129, Chamberlain Student Center, 12:15 p.m.)
During a panel discussion, professors and students will take questions from members of the University community about what their disability means to them and how it affects their lives.
"Diversity and Engagement: Effectively Serving Students With Disabilities"
(Training Room A, Memorial Hall, 1 p.m.)
A webinar, the session will give information to faculty and staff on serving the needs of the disability population.
"Fit and Functional"
(Rec Center, 3:30 p.m.)
An exercise class designed to teach participants how to exercise to fit personal needs and goals.
Wednesday, Oct. 21
Disability Mentoring Day
(Throughout campus, 9-11:30 a.m.)
A dozen students with disabilities from Pitman High School and Kingsway Learning Center will spend the morning with Rowan faculty and staff as they learn more about various jobs in higher education.
Try on a Disability/Resource Fair
(Science Building atrium, 12:30 p.m.)
In an interactive presentation, University community members will have the chance to experience a variety of disabilities. A number of groups, both on-campus and off-campus, will provide additional information on disability awareness.
Wheelchair Volleyball & Games
(Rec Center, 3:30 p.m.)
Participants will gain an understanding of what life is like in a wheelchair during this fun-filled afternoon.
Thursday, Oct. 22
"Hiring Candidates with Disabilities"
(Admissions Presentation Room, Savitz Hall, 1:30 p.m.)
Retired Navy veteran Connie Wahlen, director of strategic sourcing for The Sierra Group, Inc., will talk about job opportunities for people with disabilities. In her work, Wahlen combines her recruiting expertise with her passion to help disabled veterans make the transition to civilian careers.
Aquatic classes and demonstrations
(Rec Center pool, 2 p.m.)
This session will help participants learn how to exercise in the pool to stay fit and healthy.
