Rowan's Milou honored for contributions to mathematics education in NJ

A Washington Township resident, Milou received the Max Sobel Outstanding Mathematics Educator Award from the AMTNJ during its annual meeting. The award recognizes an educator in the state who has provided distinguished service to the AMTNJ and to New Jersey mathematics education. Sobel is a former president of AMTNJ and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, as well as a former professor at Montclair State University.

A Rowan professor since 1997 and himself a former president of AMTNJ, Milou is principal investigator/program director of the South Jersey Math Partnership, an intensive professional development project designed to improve the quality of mathematics and science instruction by middle school teachers. The project, which began in 2004, is funded by $4 million in federal grant monies and has involved nearly 150 teachers.

Milou earned his doctorate in mathematics education in 1998 from Temple University and his master's degree in mathematics from West Chester University in 1994. He earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Franklin & Marshall College in 1988.

He is the second Rowan mathematics professor to receive the Max Sobel Award. In 1994, the award was presented to Janet Caldwell.
