South Jersey Technology Park signs seven-year lease with EIRC
September 29, 2009
The South Jersey Technology Park (SJTP) at Rowan University, Inc., has fully leased its first building — the Samuel H. Jones Innovation Center — with the recent signing of a seven-year lease with the Educational Information and Resource Center, Inc. (EIRC).
EIRC, which has been based in nearby Washington Township for 25 years, will occupy the entire 22,500-square-foot second floor of the Innovation Center, which officially opened in October 2008. The organization expects to move into its new location by January 1, 2010.
The Tech Park is a mixed-use facility designed to accommodate academic research and development programs, among other operations, and to provide the resources necessary to incubate emerging technology enterprises. The Innovation Center comprises two floors totaling 45,000 square feet and includes a mix of laboratories and laboratory/office space for private organizations and for the University’s College of Engineering’s sponsored research and the Rohrer College of Business’ Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Business Incubator.
EIRC is a not-for-profit corporation specializing in education-related programs and services for parents, schools, communities, nonprofit organizations and privately held businesses throughout New Jersey as well as 35 other states and 19 foreign countries. Additionally, EIRC provides a range of software and information technology support services to its established customer base. EIRC’s programs are diverse and include gifted and special education services; nationally validated programs in science, mathematics and geography; child assault prevention classes; computer instruction; teacher in-service and curriculum design; international exchange programs; and information technology products and services for the K-12 market.
EIRC plans to house its primary operation in the Innovation Center, including the Learning Resource Center instructional materials library and Copy Center. Other EIRC program departments moving to the Tech Park include Technology Development and Services, National Talent Network, Research and Grants, Global Resources and Child Assault Prevention and Professional Development. EIRC will maintain Washington Township and Cape May County offices where it will continue to operate Southern Region Child Care Resources Centers. EIRC provides professional support services to schools in all 21 counties of New Jersey.
“EIRC is a wonderful addition to the South Jersey Technology Park, one that not only fits well with the mission of the Tech Park but one that also will provide opportunities for our students to partner on learning activities with a well-respected non-profit organization,” said Dr. Donald Farish, Rowan’s president.
“There are great opportunities ahead for EIRC, Rowan University and the SJ Tech Park with this move, opportunities to improve services to our South Jersey school districts and businesses,” said Dr. Charles M. Ivory, EIRC executive director. “A heightened partnership with Rowan University will increase capacity for ideas generation and the ability of both entities to deliver services. Partnership work is already underway, including development of virtual reality educational experiences for students, work being created by Rowan Engineering and EIRC.”
With the Innovation Center now fully leased, SJTP will accelerate plans for the second building of a planned 25-building Tech Park, according to SJTP CEO Tom Drury. “The Tech Park offers great potential for South Jersey, from business, educational and economic standpoints,” Drury said. “We hope to break ground for our second building by April 2010.”
When complete, the Tech Park will provide competitively priced, Class “A” facilities for start-up and established companies and for researchers, inventors, entrepreneurs, professors and students on 188 acres of Rowan’s West Campus. All tenants at the Tech Park will have access to the research, development and commercialization expertise of Rowan University’s engineering, science and business faculty, among others.
SJTP is a public/private partnership that has received support from numerous organizations and individuals, including the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology, South Jersey businessman Samuel H. Jones, the Rowan University Foundation, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
