On Capitol Hill: Rowan seniors participate in Model Congress

Rowan University students William Moen, Jr. and Thomas Woltjen, both of Camden County, are representing their Congressional districts in the 2008 United States Model House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. this month.
Presented by the American Youth Scholarship Foundation, the program has chosen one student from each Congressional District to spend five days on Capitol Hill, May 27-31, for a simulation of the U.S. House of Representatives. The program provides students with a first-hand look at the inner workings of Congress.
Both senior political science majors, Moen, of Runnemede, is representing New Jersey's First Congressional District, while Woltjen, of Merchantville, is representing the Third Congressional District.
Moen and Woltjen each are taking part in writing and voting on Bills and hearings in the committee rooms of the House of Representatives.
President of Rowan's Democrat Club, Moen also is pursuing minors in law and justice studies and international studies. He is Senate chair of the Student Government Association and treasurer of the Pre-Law Society.
At the Model Congress, Moen is serving on the Foreign Affairs Committee, where he hopes to discuss issues that affect not only the United States but also the global community. Those issues include immigration, the international economy, and aid to countries affected by catastrophes.
A 2005 graduate of Triton Regional High School, Moen formerly interned at Congressman Rob Andrews' office and now serves as an aide in the office of Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen Sweeney. Additionally, he's a cadet with the Woodbury Police Department.
As a member of the natural resources committee in the Model Congress, Woltjen, a 2003 graduate of Camden Catholic High School, will introduce a Bill requiring each state capital to construct a monument or dedicate a park to military personnel who have lost their lives in the Iraq War.
He'll also introduce a legislation condemning the government of Myanmar for not accepting aid from the United Nations after cyclones damaged the country.
Woltjen, 22, serves on the planning board and zoning board in Merchantville and is a member of Rowan's Democrat Club.
