Rowan to mark Asian-Pacific Cultural Heritage Month

Rowan University will celebrate Asian-Pacific Cultural Heritage Month this April with a variety of activities.

The following events will take place as part of the celebration:

Wednesday, April 2: Join the Asian Cultural Association and Rowan's "Iron Chefs" as they compete in the Asian Food Cook-Off Competition from 7-9 p.m., Room 144 B-D, Chamberlain Student Center.

Monday, April 7: Visiting Professor and Fulbright Scholar Yuan (Julia) Zhu, will host an Asian Calligraphy Workshop from 10:50 a.m.-noon, Room 129, Chamberlain Student Center.

Tuesday, April 8: Students will share their experiences in and out of the classroom at the panel discussion: "Is Learning Chinese Really Hard? Rowan Students Tell All!" The event will be moderated by Professor Yuan (Julia) Zhu from 12:30-2 p.m., Room 304, Bunce Hall.

Thursday, April 10: Dr. Youru (Charlie) Wang, a noted Buddhist scholar, will discuss religious ideas and practices in China past and present in "De-institutionalization, Syncretism and Beyond --- Studies in Chinese Religious Thought." The lecture will be held in Room 221 of the Chamberlain Student Center from 10:50 a.m.-12:05 p.m.

Saturday, April 12: Visiting performers will present Asian Extravaganza, an afternoon of entertainment with Indian dances, Japanese drummers, and Chinese martial arts from 3-5 p.m. at Boyd Recital Hall in Wilson Hall. Contact the Student Center Information Desk at 856-256-4606 for tickets.

Sunday, April 13: A meal in Chinatown and visit at Fairmont Park are part of the Philadelphia Cherry Blossom Festival and Dim Sum Trip. The Rowan bus will leave the Chamberlain Student Center at 11 a.m. and return at 3 p.m. For tickets and further information, contact Craig Katz, ext 4239 or katz@rowan.edu.

Wednesday, April 16: Dr. Paul Goldin, professor and chair of the department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Pennsylvania, is the keynote speaker at Asian Cultural Month Luncheon from 10:50 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Eynon Ballroom of the Chamberlain Student Center. An expert on Chinese thoughts, Goldin will talk about the relevance of Confucian learning in contemporary America as part of his speech, "Confucianism for Americans?" Monday, April 14: The Asian Cultural Association will sponsor a Japanese Origami Workshop, a demonstration of the making of origami and discussions of its cultural meaning, from 10:50 a.m.-noon, Room 129, Chamberlain Student Center.

Thursday, April 24: The Asian Cultural Festival will include an Asian fashion show, Indian and Chinese dances, a Karate demonstration, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Korean singing, free food and bubble tea at Rowan After Hours in the Chamberlain Student Center Pit from 9-11 p.m.

Tuesday, April 29: Professor Jin Y. Park, of the department of philosophy and religion at American University, will discuss the impact of modernity on the development of Buddhism in her native country in her lecture, "Buddhism and Modernity in Korea," from 10:50 a.m.-12:05 p.m., Room 3091, Education Hall.

Wednesday, April 30: Internationally known scholar Dr. Halil Demirdelen of the Anatolian Civilizations Museum in Ankara, Turkey will present "The Archaeology of Anatolian Civilizations" from 9:25-10:30 a.m. in Boyd Recital Hall in Wilson Hall.
