Patti Smith, a 2007 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, grew up in Woodbury and studied art at Glassboro Stare College in the mid-1960s. As a musician and poet, she helped foment a revolution in the music world during the mid-1970s and influenced scores of performers and recording artists who came in her wake. Beginning with her landmark 1975 debut, Horses, Smith has released a string of recordings that have solidified her place as an independent, revolutionary artist. Her latest CD, Twelve, features covers of classic songs by Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Nirvana, Paul Simon and The Beatles. She is the author of numerous books showcasing her poetry and, as a visual artist, her work has been exhibited in New York, Japan, Paris, Rome and throughout the United States.
New Jersey native Janet Hamill is a poet, painter and performer who attended Glassboro State College in the 1960s, graduating in 1967 with a degree in English. Hamill is the author of four books: Lost Ceilings, Nostalgia of the Infinite, The Temple and Troublante, while her poetry and fiction have appeared in numerous anthologies. She is presently writing her first novel and her fifth volume of poetry, Body of Water, will be published this fall. As a spoken word artist, Hamill has read at well-known poetry venues around the world, including a workshop in Liverpool, England, this past summer. She also presents readings accompanied by her band Moving Star, and together they have released two CDs, Flying Nowhere and Genie of the Alphabet, with a third in the works.
