Recycling Bin Blitz kicks off Rowan's participation in Focus the Nation
January 23, 2008
School offers a variety of activities, presentations on the environment
During the "Recycling Bin Distribution Blitz," Rowan University student volunteers will pepper campus classrooms with 200 new blue recycling bins to mark the University's kick off of single-stream recycling and its participation in Focus the Nation, a national discussion on global warming and sustainability solutions for America.
The Blitz will start on Monday, January 28, at 10 a.m. in the Campbell Library (first floor lobby), Rt. 322, Glassboro.
Rowan, which has won numerous awards for its environmental initiatives, expects to boost recycling two- to three-fold with single stream recycling, which will enable the campus community to recycle cardboard, paper, glass, aluminum and plastic in the same receptacle.
The Recycling Bin Distribution Blitz is just the start of Focus the Nation at Rowan, which will join more than 1,000 institutions — mostly colleges and universities — in marking the event. As part of the Blitz, Commissioner Christine V. Bator of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities will present Rowan with the BPU’s 2007 Clean Energy School of the Year official award.
Among the activities planned for the week are:
- A presentation on "An Inconvenient Truth," the original talk upon which the award-winning movie was based (Tuesday, January 29, 7:30 p.m. in the Rowan Hall/College of Engineering auditorium)
- A Rowan Teach-In on Climate Control (Thursday, January 31, from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Student Center) on topics such as "Environmental Ethics," "The Time Famine: Excessive Consumption and Waste," "Smart Growth," and "Ethanol from Corn Stalks," among many others.
