University to join HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers
October 12, 2007
In an effort to increase awareness about the importance of designated drivers, Rowan University will launch a new partnership with the HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers on Monday, Oct. 15, at 1:30 p.m. in the Pit of the Chamberlain Student Center.
During the event, which kicks off Alcohol Awareness Week at Rowan, University President Donald Farish will join with Bill Elliott, founder of the HERO Campaign, in launching the campaign.
Elliott's son, Navy Ensign John Elliott, was killed in 2000 in Salem County by a drunken driver. The Elliott family established the HERO campaign in his memory.
Named after John Elliott's title as Human Education Resource Officer (HERO) of his Naval Academy class, the campaign is credited with reducing drunk driving through the creation of John's Law, which requires New Jersey police officers to impound the vehicles of drunk drivers for up to 12 hours and to issue responsibility warnings to those taking custody of the offenders.
John Elliott was killed by a drunken driver who had been released to a friend after his arrest.
As part of the HERO Campaign at Rowan, the Landmark Americana, a popular restaurant in Glassboro, will offer free soda to designated drivers during its college discount nights.
