Dr. Oleh Shamshur, ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, will speak on "Ukraine and Nuclear Non-proliferation in the Post-Soviet Era," on Monday, October 15, from 11 a.m. until noon, in Boyd Recital Hall in Wilson Hall at Rowan University, Glassboro, N.J.

Sponsored by the College of Business, the presentation is one in a series of events planned for the 2007-08 academic year to mark the 40th anniversary of the Hollybush Summit. In June 1967, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin met in the Hollybush Mansion on the grounds of then-Glassboro State College to discuss their opposing views on the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War and the perils of the nuclear arms race. While Johnson and Kosygin signed no formal agreement, they did acknowledge that the Hollybush Summit was successful, and the Summit helped start to ease some Cold War tensions.

Shamshur has a long history of service to his country. He has served as deputy minister of Foreign Affairs; head of the European Union Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine; minister/counselor, Embassy of Ukraine to the Benelux Countries; deputy chairman, State Committee for Nationalities and Migration of Ukraine, member of the President's Commission on Citizenship; and first secretary/counselor of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva.

He was a visiting scholar at University College, London, and worked at the
Institute of Social and Economic Problems of Foreign Countries, Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

He earned a Ph. D. in history from Kyiv University and an undergraduate degree with a specialization in international relations from Taras Shevchenko Kyiv University, Department of International Relations and International Law.

Rowan will host numerous other events throughout the academic year, including:

  • February 19, 2008
