Rowan Ad Club honored with "Outstanding Achievement Award"
The Philly Ad Club recently recognized the Rowan University Ad Club with an "Outstanding Achievement Award" during ADDY Awards Celebration 2007 at the National Constitution Center.
The award recognized the ad students' five-year dedication in developing and maintaining both a professional Web site and a professional news magazine.
Back in 2002, the Philly Ad Club challenged the Rowan students to create a newsletter and to revive its Web site. Virtually from scratch?and with no budget?the students created a magazine format and built a Web site.
AD NEWS magazine is a bi-monthly, full color trade publication with a 10,000 circulation (25,000 readership). The Philly Ad Club Web site (www.PhillyAdClub.com) now consistently exceeds 750,000 monthly hits and features regional industry news and events, columns, agency and media contact directories and a job bank?all updated daily.
"Handling a consistent product that has become the most comprehensive news source for the Greater Philadelphia advertising and communication industry over a five-year period is a major accomplishment for our students," said Professor Charles Volpe, faculty advisor to the Rowan Ad Club for the past 16 years. "We're the only university in the nation that has tackled this type of project."
The experience is valuable to both students and professionals.
"Having students managing a professional magazine and Web site is an ideal relationship for both the students and the professional club," said Volpe.
"The Philly Ad Club wanted a cost-effective Web site and magazine. We wanted students 'rubbing shoulders with industry leaders.' The students are responsible for covering events, interviewing key industry influencers, taking event photos and managing all the logistics of the magazine and Web site."
The 110-member Rowan University Ad Club is a student-run organization for advertising majors and for students interested in advertising. The club, celebrating its 30th year at Rowan University, meets weekly and plans programs including: guest speakers, workshops, carpooled trips, conferences and agency visits, sports and social activities.
In the past five years, The Rowan University Ad Club, has received an ADDY Award, two American Advertising Federation (AAF) "National Achievement Awards" and an AAF District II "Crystal Prism Award."
