N.J. Supreme Court chief justice and Gloucester County superintendent of schools to address Rowan graduates

The Hon. James R. Zazzali, chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, will be the commencement speaker at Rowan University's ceremony for 1,909 undergraduate students on
Friday, May 11, beginning at 10 a.m. on the green in front of Bunce Hall off both Rt. 322 and Whitney Avenue.
Sworn into office in October 2006 as the seventh chief justice to lead the New Jersey Supreme Court since the 1947 Constitution, Zazzali has a long history of service to the state.
First named to the Supreme Court in 2000, Zazzali also served as chief of the Appeals Divisions of the Office of the Essex County Prosecutor, general counsel to the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, receiver for Bloomfield College, chairman of the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation, vice chairman of the state Disciplinary Review Board, commissioner of the State Commission of Investigation and New Jersey Attorney General.
Additionally, the United States District Court appointed him special master for the county jails in Essex, Monmouth and Bergen counties. He also served, at the request of the United States State Department, on delegations to United Nations' conferences and was chair of the Congressional Superfund Study Group. He was engaged in the practice of law in Newark and Trenton in the firm founded by his late father and his brother, Zazzali, Fagella & Nowak.
He is a former adjunct professor at Seton Hall Law School; former associate editor of the New Jersey Law Journal; and a contributor to various mass media magazines, newspapers and law journals.
A graduate of Seton Hall Preparatory School, West Orange; Georgetown College; and Georgetown Law Center, Zazzali is admitted to the New Jersey, New York and District of Columbia bars.
Mark Stanwood, county superintendent of schools in Gloucester County, will address Rowan's 370 graduate students at their commencement on Thursday, May 10, at 4:30 p.m. at John Page Field, the Rowan athletic stadium at the corner of Carpenter Street and Bowe Boulevard in Glassboro.
Holder of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Rowan University, Stanwood has served both Rowan University and the State of New Jersey in advancing public education. Charged with general oversight of Gloucester County schools, he represents the commissioner of education in statutory and administrative code issues.
Stanwood has maintained membership in Rowan's chapter of Phi Delta Kappa since 1978, the College of Education Advisory Committee since 1998 and the Beginning Teacher Induction Center Advisory Committee since 2005. He has taught courses in special educational services, curriculum development, education policy and educational leadership and change theory at Rowan and has presented papers and written articles with other Rowan faculty on diverse education topics. Stanwood specializes in school district consolidation policies, teaching non-traditional learners, the culture of safe schools and more.
In the past, Stanwood has served the Commissioner's Advisory Committee on shared services and consolidation, the Governor's Task Force on Special Education and the Commissioner's Summer Work Group on Funding Special Education.
Stanwood remains active on the Gloucester County College Board of Trustees, Gloucester County Institute of Technology Board of Education, Gloucester County Special Services School District Board of Education and the Gloucester County Workforce Investment Board.
