Rowan University civil and environmental engineering students and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will host the 2007 Student Regional Concrete Canoe Competition for Metropolitan ASCE division on Saturday, April 28, starting at 8:15 a.m. at Lake Kandle Campground and Swim Club, Chapel Heights Road, Sewell.

Rowan students, as well as student teams from New York City College of Technology, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Polytechnic University in Brooklyn and Rutgers University, will launch their concrete canoes onto Lake Kandle to see how well their creations navigate the water.

To combat the problem of concrete being heavier than water, the engineering team members must figure out what kind and combination of lighter substances they need to mix with the concrete to keep their canoes afloat.

The morning activities will feature float tests and endurance races, with preliminary sprint races beginning at approximately 10:30 a.m. and sprint finals at 12:30 p.m.

Teams compete in four areas, each worth 25 percent of their overall score: an academic paper; oral presentation; canoe appearance, durability and quality; and five races.

Rowan University students won the regional competition and moved on to the nationals in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. They placed second in 2004 and 2006, and took third place in 2005.
