Former Tulane University engineering professor Calvin Mackie will discuss the far-reaching impact of Hurricane Katrina during a talk Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Rowan University.

Mackie's talk, which begins at 11 a.m. in Room 3091 of Rowan's Education Hall, is part of the University's observance of African American History Month. The topic of his talk will be "The sociological, political and technological impact of Katrina."

A well-known motivational speaker and successful entrepreneur, Mackie was an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Tulane, located in New Orleans, for 11 years. In 2005, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Bianco appointed Mackie to the 33-member Louisiana Recovery Authority, the agency that led the state's rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Katrina.

Author of the book A View from the Roof: Lessons for Life and Business, Mackie appeared in the Spike Lee film "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Parts," a documentary about Katrina.

In 2003, Mackie received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

Mackie's talk, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the African-American History Month Committee at Rowan. The theme of the month is "From Slavery to Freedom: The Struggles and Contributions of Africans in the Americas."
