The Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) has awarded a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Rowan University freshman Matthew Ruiz, 18, of Marlton.

A Cadet in Rowan's Army ROTC program, Ruiz is the first Rowan student in at least a decade to earn one of the scholarships, for which he was selected from among candidates across the country.

According to Captain John DiDonato, Military Science Instructor for Rowan's ROTC, scholarship candidates are evaluated on their academics, physical fitness score and participation in extracurricular activities in and out of school. Ruiz has an outstanding GPA, is a member of the Rowan ROTC color guard, supervises missions as a member of Civil Air Patrol and volunteers for his church (Maranatha Fellowship, Moorestown).

"It is a privilege and an honor to receive this scholarship. I consider this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fulfill a dream to serve my country and give back to my community," Ruiz said.
