October 30, 2006
Catch A Rising Star Comedy Clubs has announced that it will hold its second annual "Catch A Rising Star College Comedy Challenge" at Rowan University's Student Center Pit on Monday, Nov. 6, at 9 p.m.
Ten Rowan student comedians are scheduled to perform. Also at the show will be Rodney Laney, a New Jersey native and nationally touring comedian. Laney will act as host. Acts will be provided by Catch a Rising Star, as well.
Other New Jersey colleges and universities, taking part in the competition include The College of New Jersey, Stockton College and Centenary College.
The student comedians will compete against each other at their respective schools in early November, with guest judges scoring their performances. Three finalists at each school will then move on to the final competition at Catch A Rising Star in Atlantic City. The ultimate winner will get a paid gig at a future Catch show.
The first "Catch A Rising Star College Comedy Challenge" was held in 2005, with over 30 student comedians taking part in the competition. Princeton University's Patrick Cunningham was the eventual winner.
Catch A Rising Star Comedy Clubs opened its first club in New York City in 1972. Since then, Catch has had some of the most famous comedians walk through its door. Catch Alumni include: Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Rosie O'Donnell, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Maher, Richard Belzer, Ray Romano, Jon Lovitz, Chris Rock, Bob Saget and Robert Wuhl.
