Rowan Documentary Teams Capture National Awards
Rowan Documentary Teams Capture National Awards
January 10, 2006
Rowan University documentary film crews from the Radio/TV/Film (RTF) Department captured two first-place trophies -- the prestigious Golden Eagle Awards -- in the Fall 2005 CINE Student Division Documentary competition.
The CINE Golden Eagle Awards, distinguishing excellence in professional and amateur works, are recognized internationally as symbols of the highest production standards in filmmaking and videography. Since its founding in 1957, CINE has been dedicated to discovering, rewarding, educating and supporting established and emerging talent in film and video. Rowan student documentary makers have won four CINE Golden Eagle awards in the last three years.
Rowan?s documentary students won their Golden Eagles for ?Finding the Light,? which explored Quaker culture and was supported by a grant from the Society of Friends, and ?Heroin: a Dose of Reality,? which took a hard look at the world of heroin addiction and was supported by Rowan?s own Center for Addiction Studies. (The Center has distributed the documentary to all New Jersey colleges and hundreds of New Jersey high schools.)
?I continue to be amazed at the creativity and dedication our students show in their thoughtful documentaries about our everyday world,? said Ned Eckhardt, chair of the Rowan RTF Department. ?Documentaries give young people a voice. These young documentarians are continually trying to make our world a better place by revealing critical social issues and providing thought-provoking solutions. Over the years, Rowan?s documentary students have successfully competed with the best film and television students in the USA. The CINE Golden Eagles are like the Emmys and Oscars for student film and video productions. Rowan students have won four CINE Golden Eagles in three years, a wonderful accomplishment.?
Among great talents whose first major awards included the CINE Golden Eagle are Steven Spielberg and George Lucas and documentarians Ken Burns, Charles Guggenheim, Stanley Nelson and Frederick Wiseman.
In the latest CINE competition, more than 300 judges viewed and evaluated hundreds of entries. Experienced professionals in the field of film and video production, as well as subject matter experts, served as volunteers. They judged the entries using standards of overall excellence, evaluating such criteria as writing, sound, editing, creativity, visuals, insights and the extent to which the films met their stated goals and communicated with their intended audiences.
The awards will be presented at the Annual CINE Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C., in April, at which time Rowan will learn if it has won further honors.
Other winners in the student documentary category were from Boston University, the University of North Carolina -- Greensboro; the University of California -- Berkeley and the University of Southern California.
